X-15
X-15 - The Supreme Plane. The X-15 was an American experimental aircraft that first flew in 1959. It was designed to test new technology and push the limits of aviation, especially at extreme altitudes and speeds. The plane was a remarkable success, setting altitude and speed records that still stand today. The X-15 was developed by NASA in partnership with the United States Air Force and the American aerospace industry. The goal was to create a plane that could fly faster and higher than any other plane in existence at the time. For this, the X-15 was equipped with a rocket engine and wings that could be adjusted to different angles of incidence. The first flight of the X-15 took place on June 8, 1959, piloted by Scott Crossfield. In the following years, the plane performed a series of experimental flights, reaching ever greater altitudes and speeds. In 1963, the X-15 set an altitude record of 107.96 km (354,200 ft), which is still the altitude record for a manned aircraft. The plane also reached speeds in excess of Mach 6.7 (about 7,200 km/h).The X-15 was not an easy plane to fly. Pilots needed a lot of skill and training to deal with the high speeds and altitudes at which the plane operated. The plane was also very dangerous, with several accidents occurring during the years it flew. Three pilots died in accidents with the X-15.Despite the risks, the X-15 was a milestone in aviation history. He helped advance human spaceflight technology by providing valuable data for NASA's Apollo program. The plane was also responsible for the development of many technologies that are still used in modern aviation, including heat-resistant materials and advanced flight control systems. The X-15 last flew in 1968 after 199 test flights. After its retirement, the plane was put on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. It remains one of the most remarkable experimental aircraft ever created, and a symbol of the human potential to overcome limits and advance technology.
